Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Management

Vanuatu’s Disability Promotion and Advocacy Associations’ Communications Officer, Bani Alfred has returned from a successful stint in the CBM Australia and Oxfam supported Leadership Fellowship with the Nossal Institute for Global Health.

Alfred was able to bring the experiences of people with disability during Cyclone Pam to an international audience and participated in a panel to inform attendees of some of the high and low points Vanuatu experienced in that disaster.

He also received his leadership certificate from Timothy Moore from the Nossal Institute for Global Health.

The DPA thanked everyone that made this happen and said it is excited about the next steps including engagement here in Vanuatu with the Red Cross, World Vision and other agencies engaged in disaster risk management to bring an understanding of the experience of people with disability to planning for our many natural disasters.

Alfred was also able to catch up with APIDS - Australia Pacific Islands Disability Support board member Robyn James.

APIDS has provided ongoing support to DPA.
