Donald Trump's campaign chairman, resigns

Paul Manafort, the embattled chairman of Donald Trump's presidential campaign who has been under fire in connection with a Ukrainian corruption investigation, has tendered his resignation.

"This morning Paul Manafort offered, and I accepted, his resignation from the campaign," Mr Trump said in a statement.

"I am very appreciative for his great work in helping to get us where we are today, and in particular his work guiding us through the delegate and convention process.

"Paul is a true professional and I wish him the greatest success."

It comes on the same day Ukrainian authorities released details of million dollar payments Mr Manafort allegedly received from Kiev's former Russian-backed leaders.

Earlier this week, Mr Manafort was effectively demoted in a campaign staff reshuffle.

The Republican candidate overhauled his presidential campaign team, hiring the head of a conservative news website to bolster his combative image and reverse poor opinion poll numbers in his race against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Mr Manafort was brought on in June in an attempt to bring a more professional touch to the campaign, but had struggled to rein in Mr Trump's freewheeling ways.
