DWU holds inaugural maths and computing symposium

The Information System and Mathematic and Computing Science department of Divine Word University hosted their first ever combined symposium at the Madang campus.

“Innovation through collaborative learning and knowledge creation is the global network of information technology, mathematics and computer science” was the theme for this year’s annual symposium.

The day marked the IS Department 11th Annual symposium whilst the MC department marked its 4th.

The symposium saw 40 students present the result of their final year research and development projects.

Head of Department for Information System and Mathematics and Computer Sciences, Professor Peter Anderson, says the combined symposium was a significant milestone for the development of the two departments.

“Under staff supervision, students undertake a research project which will involve them in developing a solution to a real world IS/IT scenario which they have identified during the course of their studies or during periods of work experience,” Prof Anderson says.

He adds that the project is also seen as a preparation for those about to enter the workforce where graduates will be expected to think for themselves in confronting challenges with minimum supervision.

“Delivering a service innovation to a PNG organisation, particularly to those that are self-funded is regarded as an important component of each research project.”
