NZ Rugby will continue to push for changes in Super Rugby

New Zealand Rugby will continue to push for a change to the Super Rugby play-off format.

SANZAR announced this week that there would be not change to the competition in 2016 despite drawing plenty of criticism over the conference set-up which meant some teams didn't meet during the season and some teams hosted finals despite accumulating less points that their opponents.

NZR boss Steve Tew says they wanted a straight top eight play-off, but that idea was rejected by South Africa and Australia.

Tew says they won't give up, "we think it would have produced a fairer finals result this year, but our partners think this year was an aberration and that we won't have four teams in the finals again and they don't want to make a change."

"It is disappointing that we couldn't get agreement from South Africa and Australia, we haven't completely given up and it's unlikely we'll get any substantial change in 2016 but if there are any changes for 2018 then that gives us an opportunity for further debate."

"We'll keep plugging away because we think it makes a lot more sense for there to be a straight top eight, it makes it a lot easier for the fans who can disregard the conferences."

New Zealand had four teams in the play-offs this year with just the Hurricanes hosting a game in the first round.
