Vanuatu advance Team arrives for Games

The advance team for Team Vanuatu is in the country in preparation for the Pacific Games next week on July 4.

It is headed by Chef de Mission Eileen Nangan, who said they are ready for the games and have prepared well to challenge the other Pacific Island countries.

“Like all other Pacific Island countries, we all want to go back not empty handed but with pride and happiness and Team Vanuatu will be one of the teams that will be aiming for medals during this game,” she said.

She said the advance  team are here to see for themselves the preparation and also get the feel of the atmosphere and the spirit of the games in the country.

She has been accompanied by 5 officials. Four of them will be observing the preparation and organisation of the event as Vanuatu will be hosting the event in 2017.

Ms Nangan, who is from East New Britain and married to a Vanuatu man, says out of the 28 sporting codes, they will be participating in only 13.

She said the special event that will be closely monitored is the Para table tennis where two of her disabled athletes will be participating.

Team Vanuatu will be taking part in cricket, beach volleyball, boxing, karate, taekwondo, netball rugby touch, rugby, athletics, table tennis and tennis.

Ms Nangan told PNG Loop that a total of 156 athletes will be participating excluding the officials.

In terms of the games preparation, she said PNG has been preparing well and will host the games successfully.
