Vanuatu in talks with World Bank for higher standard runway

Talks have begun between the Vanuatu government and the World Bank on upgrading the Bauerfield International Airport to a higher standard.

The Minister for Public Utilities and Infrastructure Jotham Napat said the government's in negotiation with the institution to give the airport a full Code E runway.

RNZI reports that would allow larger aircraft such as Boeing 787s and Airbus A330s to land in Port Vila.

An airport task force appointed by Mr Napat has already started discussions with the World Bank with a view to starting work immediately.

He said the government is committed to supporting development and tourism in Vanuatu therefore Vanuatu needs the infrastructure in place to do so.
