Wellington Phoenix striker Roy Krishna voted PFA player of the month

In-form Wellington Phoenix striker Roy Krishna hopes to have his future sorted before the season ends.

"Obviously, yes. But the main focus is not about me. I've just got to perform every week and whatever comes I'll be happy. My main target for this season is to get the club to the playoffs and that's what I'm focussing on," Krishna said.

Krishna is one of 17 Phoenix players off-contract at the end of the season and Stuff understands Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners are keen to sign the Fijian international who has scored 12 goals in 19 games — already equalling his best-ever return.

It was announced on Tuesday that Krishna had bagged the PFA player of the month award for the month of January and he said the secret to his success was simply enjoying his football again.

"Mark [Rudan] has given me the freedom to believe in myself, which I was lacking last season, and it shows on the pitch. All of the boys are helping me and as age goes you get more experience and that helps me too, but you just have to work hard and get in the right spaces."

Krishna broke a four-game scoring drought when he netted in the Phoenix's 1-1 draw with Melbourne Victory on Friday, volleying home from close-range.

He remains one goal behind Sydney FC striker Adam Le Fondre in the golden boot race.

"Every striker wants to score every week," he said. "It was frustrating not to get goals but the main thing was I was getting in good positions. It was good to convert one but I should have got two, but it's part of football and I just have to keep working hard on the training pitch.

"I'm not worried about the stats, if I get [golden boot] it'd be awesome but for me to help the team even with a goal or without a goal, maybe an assist or something, as long as we're getting three points I'm all good."

Krishna said it was disappointing to come away with just one point, after his foul on Leigh Broxham provided Keisuke Honda with a chance to level from the penalty spot.

Earlier in the game he spurned a chance to double the lead, with Lawrence Thomas producing a vital save to deny him in a one-on-one opportunity.

"It was obviously disappointing. We had a few chances we should have put in. But at the end of the day it was fair enough. Both teams were attacking and I think it was an open game. They're a good side but we are disappointed not to get three points at home especially as the fans came out in big numbers and I want to thank them as well."

The Phoenix take on Sydney in Campbelltown on Saturday night.
