Barras lose opener to UAE

United Arab Emirates batted first and finished the innings all out for 221.

With the Duckworth/Lewis method in play, the target was reduced to a 170 for victory in 28 overs.

A batting collapse in the top order led to their demise as the Barras were bowled out for 113.

“I didn’t start too well in my first over, but I managed to pull it back after that. Overall I was very happy with my death bowling, which has been a key part of my game over the past couple of months,” said fast bowler, Norman Vanua.

Adam Nawalka's men piled on 13 goals over their final three World Cup qualifying matches but, with Lewandowski resting an injured thigh, were held to a 0-0 home draw by Uruguay on Friday.

And further questions over the team's attacking depth were raised by a second toothless display.

Raul Jimenez's 13th minute goal proved the difference in a muted affair as both managers looked to experiment with their options for the World Cup.

Brazil qualify for Russia 2018

The five-times champions beat Paraguay 3-0 yesterday for their eighth successive win in the South American qualifying competition.

That in itself was not enough to confirm their participation in Russia but Peru's surprise 2-1 win over Uruguay in a later game guaranteed Brazil a top-four finish.

With four rounds of fixtures remaining, Brazil have 33 points, followed by Colombia (24), Uruguay and Chile (23). Argentina (22) are currently in fifth place, which earns a two-legged playoff against the top-ranked Oceania region side.
