Crusaders name change: Maintaining the status quo 'no longer tenable'

There has been debate over the appropriateness of the Crusaders name following the Christchurch mosque terror attack. The Crusades were a series of religious and political wars between Christians and Muslims fought in the 11th and 13th centuries.

Crusaders chief executive Colin Mansbridge said that in the wake of the terror attacks in Christchurch, the franchise was "treating the question around the appropriateness of our brand extremely seriously".

Crusaders name change discussions already underway

The Crusades were a series of religious and political wars between Christians and Muslims fought in the 11th and 13th centuries.

There has been debate over the appropriateness of the Crusaders name following the Christchurch mosque terror attack and the organisation has said it would review the name at some stage in the future.

New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew said it had already had discussions with the franchise, but would not put a timeframe on any possible name change.

Crusaders hold off on name change

In light of the Mosque shootings in Christchurch, there have been suggestions that the Super Rugby team should change its name.

The franchise said they'll take on board all concerns.

The Crusaders logo depicts a medieval knight swinging a sword, while horsemen often ride into the Christchurch stadium ahead of matches dressed as medieval knights.

In a statement the franchise says it understands the concerns that have been raised but believes now is not the time to discuss the matter.
