This follows revelations that 125 traffic accidents were recorded in the capital over the last four months.

Most of the accidents have been blamed on careless or reckless driving.

There were two fatalities and 26 accidents involving drunk drivers.

The police said they suspect other accidents were not reported.

Vanuatu police warn drivers

Police recorded 12 road accidents within a period of only 7 days.

The latest accident was last weekend when a woman was hit by a vehicle in Port Vila.

Police says speed limits are certainly important although it was too soon to say if speed was a factor in the latest case, adding that investigations are underway.

The Police Traffic section is warning all drivers driving around public roads to respect the traffic laws to ensure the roads are safe to use by other road users.

The Vanuatu Daily Post reports the equipment, provided by the World Health Organisation, was presented on Thursday.

The WHO has also trained two senior officers how to use the kits.

Mr Nalpini said he was overjoyed as the equipment will help police carry out their duties more effectively.

He admitted that in the past courts had allowed suspects to go free due to lack of evidence.
