Former Prime Minister Serge Vohor

Vanuatu anti-corruption advocate says justice has been served

On Friday, the former Prime Minister, Serge Vohor, and a former MP for Efate, Steven Kalsakau, were the first of 14 MPs who were jailed for corruption in 2015 to be granted parole.

Eleven of the other inmates are understood to have submitted their applications for parole, having served half their sentences.

The chair of Vanuatu Women Against Crime and Corruption, Jenny Ligo, said while some might disagree with them being released early she feels justice has been served.

A journalist in Port Vila, Evelyne Toa, said a crowd gathered to witness the politicians emerges through the gates at 10 o'clock, local time.

"There were a few family members waiting outside the entrance of the prison, a few supporters and members of their political parties [and] they walked out escorted by the current leader of the opposition."

The two to be freed are a former Prime Minister, Serge Vohor and a former MP for Efate, Steven Kalsakau.

They were imprisoned in 2015 with 12 other former MPs after being convicted of bribery.

The Director of Correctional Service Johnny Marango said the Parole Board found the two had shown good behaviour and cooperation during their term in jail, which halved their three-year prison term.

He said the Board has also received parole applications from 11 other inmates after the appeal court quashed their conviction of conspiracy to defeat the course of justice.
