Harry Styles and Top Gun Maverick boost entertainment industry with record sales

The two releases sold the most in the music and video sectors respectively, early trade body figures suggest.

The total spent on home entertainment last year, including gaming, was £11.1bn - 6.9% up on 2021 and 39% up on the last pre-pandemic year of 2019.

In contrast, UK box office takings are up on 2021 but lower than pre-pandemic.

The digital entertainment and retail association (ERA) said its preliminary figures were "a huge vote of confidence" for the sector.

Oscars 2023: Harry Styles has two films hoping for awards glory

Venice, Telluride (in Colorado) and Toronto all take place within a few days of each other in late August and September, and compete to host the very best movies.

Even though it doesn't get all of the major films which play at the other events, Toronto is a reliable Oscar predictor.

For the last decade, the winner of the festival's People's Choice Award, voted for by filmgoers, has consistently landed a best picture nomination, with a couple of films - Green Book and Nomadland - going on to win.

The man landed on other people in the Glasgow crowd as the former One Direction star performed his encore.

He was seen by medical staff and is not believed to have been seriously injured.

About 50,000 fans were at the sell-out gig, which was the first at Rangers FC's stadium in almost 20 years.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were made aware of a man falling from a club deck at a premises on Edmiston Drive, Glasgow, at around 10.15pm on Saturday, 11 June, 2022.

Coachella 2022: Kanye West, Billie Eilish and Harry Styles to headline

It's being held for the first time since 2019 after the 2020 festival was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The festival runs across two weekends in April in Indio, California, with the same line-up appearing on them both.

Swedish House Mafia, Flume, Megan Thee Stallion, Disclosure, Doja Cat and Run the Jewels will also perform.

Billie Eilish will become the festival's youngest ever headliner.

Coachella was set to be headlined by Rage Against the Machine, Travis Scott and Frank Ocean, but was postponed several times.

Harry Styles has won his first prestigious Ivor Novello award

It comes eight years after Noel Gallagher praised the event, which recognises songwriters, "because clowns like One Direction aren't invited".

Brit Award winner Celeste was named songwriter of the year alongside her writing partner Jamie Hardman.

The judges recognised the pair for songs including Stop This Flame, Love Is Back and A Little Love, which featured on the John Lewis Christmas advert.

Other winners included Lianne La Havas, who picked up best album for her self-titled second record, written with Matthew Hales.

Music listening soared during lockdown

More than 155m albums were bought or streamed in 2020, an increase of 8.2%, according to record label body the BPI.

British artists Lewis Capaldi, Harry Styles and Dua Lipa were the three biggest-sellers of the year.

BPI boss Geoff Taylor said the "remarkable" figures were a reminder of "how important music is to our country, even when our lives are disrupted".

Lewis Capaldi's Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent was the UK's biggest-selling album for the second year in a row.

However, despite the boom in consumption, sales of individual albums were down.

Mexican news programme accidentally names Harry Styles as father of royal baby

The blunder came as the show covered the first glimpse of Archie along with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex last week.

Above the subtitle, "They showed their first-born for the first time," were the words "Harry Styles y Meghan Markle," meaning Harry Styles and Meghan Markle.

A screenshot of the show's mistake was immediately shared on social, and proceeded to be posted by others.

Most of the reaction focussed around Harry Styles' fans laughing at the faux pas.

Styles himself has not commented on the post.

Fans noticed that while XS, small and medium sizes cost $40 (£29), large, XL and XXL shirts cost $45 (£33).

The company selling merchandise at his LA gig says it was an error.

"There was a mistake in size pricing at [Wednesday] night's show," according to a representative for Live Nation. "Harry and his team were unaware and this has now been rectified."

Harry Styles opened his North America tour in San Francisco on Tuesday before playing at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Meet the Harry Styles fans with tickets to his secret gig

After releasing his debut solo album on Friday the former One Direction star announced the intimate show, at a north London club, via Twitter.

The Garage in Highbury has a capacity of just 600 people so it was first come, first served.

Tickets were £10 and Newsbeat caught up with a few of the lucky fans who managed to bag one.

Chiara, 21, didn't even manage to get dressed: "I'm wearing my pyjamas with the Little Mermaid and everyone inside was saying, "are you wearing this tonight at the gig" and I actually might as it's fancy."

Fears over fake Bieber and Styles accounts

The growing world of social media apps with big teenage audiences has made the situation even more difficult to police, they say.

"Identity assumption by child sex offenders is increasing quite steadily," Detective Inspector Jon Rouse, who runs task force Argos, a specialist branch responsible for tackling online child exploitation in Queensland, Australia, told us.
