Ni-Vanuatu workers are putting Pacific values into practice in regional Australia through community service

So after moving to Stawell in 2020, Junior Issachar made a conscious effort to get involved with his new community.

"Our passion is to be a blessing … and put a smile on someone's face," he said. 

ABC Pacific reports Issachar is one of a growing number of workers from Vanuatu who have moved to the small town in regional Victoria under the federal government's Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.

And when they are not working at the town's meatworks, they can often be found out in the community visiting the elderly and people living with disabilities.

She is one of four broadcasters from Vanuatu and Fiji who will be calling the Oceania Football Confederation Women's Nations Cup Finals in Bislama and Fijian, as well as English. 

Jennesa says it is exciting to be a trailblazer; 

“I can now commentate on any other football event happening in Vanuatu and I believe many women will learn from my experience.”

Joining her is fellow Ni-Vanuatu Adele Willie and Fijians Josephine Navula and Lavenia Yalovi.

Vanuatu gains two Official Referees for Karate Competitions

Kevin Kausiama from Tanna /Pentecost and Marcel Yawiko from Tanna Island were selected by the Vanuatu Karate Federation to represent Vanuatu at the Pacific Cup karate championship in New Caledonia from July 4-10, attending the training and competition.

The Sport Competition Manager (SCM) Karate for Van2017, Jack Manuel, said the selection was based on their seniority - their level of grade being currently in Dan, a grade after passing the Black Belt level, their qualifications in regional and international competitions, and also on merit.

One-third of adults in Vanuatu are financially excluded

The Financial Services Demand Side Survey (DSS) Report for Vanuatu also reported that a further 21% only access informal financial service instruments such as savings clubs, shop credit, moneylenders, or hire purchases, while 37% of Ni-Vanuatu adults have a bank account.

Ni-Vanuatu to get into New Caledonia visa free

This was announced at the weekend when the president of New Caledonia, Philippe Germain, met with Vanuatu's Prime Minister, Charlot Salwai.

According to RNZI until now ni-Vanuatu wanting to travel to New Caledonia have had to endure long waits at the French Embassy in Port Vila to secure a visa.
