Port Moresby to host world indigenous business forum

The annual event has been running since 2010, and serves as a platform where indigenous business leaders, entrepreneurs and advocates from around the world can come together to promote 'indigenous led economic development'.

Last year, the forum was hosted in Villavicencio, Colombia where 1,000 indigenous businesses from over 20 countries had the opportunity to network.

"By connecting without intermediaries, partnerships come together. Mutual business and investment opportunities can happen," WIBF's chief executive Rosa Walker said.

Refugees robbed at gunpoint in Papua New Guinea's capital

One of the attackers held a gun to the head of one of the refugees while the other two were armed with bush knives.

The stolen items included mobile phones, laptops and speakers.

Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul said no one was injured in the attack at the Koki Apartments, but the refugees had been further traumatised.

Masks to be distributed after rise in COVID-19 cases in PNG

James Marape's announcement takes the total number of cases confirmed in PNG so far to 27, over half of them having emerged in the past week.

Most of the new cases are health workers at Port Moresby General Hospital where all non-essential services have now been suspended.

This week, a terminally ill patient with advanced cancer who died at the hospital was found by a post-mortem examination to have had the coronavirus.

Earlier the government announced a cluster outbreak at the Central Public Health Laboratory on the hospital premises.

Curfew lifted in PNG capital

The curfew had been in place in Port Moresby and its surrounding region for around a month as part of PNG's state of emergency provisions in response to Covid-19.

The NBC reports Emergency Controller David Manning saying markets, pharmacies, hotels and restaurants, banks, supermarkets and licensed wholesalers are allowed to trade.

All public gatherings remain banned, and public transport has resumed with limits on passenger numbers

Mr Manning has urged the public to continue observing social distancing and safe hygiene measures.

Outstanding turn up at PNG’s film festival

The public flooded the Festival for the opening night film Power Meri, a documentary on the PNG Orchids journey to the 2017 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.

The screening was followed by a panel discussion with PNG NRL Team Leader and PNG Orchids 2017 Captain, Cathy Neap, as well as Karen Haive, Department of Community Development and Religion, Susan Ferguson, UNWomen Country Representative, and Stella Rumbam, World Vision PNG Operations Manager.

Early Christmas for Erima children

Laden with sweets, gifts and goodie bags, Digicel staff were greeted at the gate with hearty carols and beaming smiles from the more than 150 students, ranging from 3 to 12 years old.

Their smiles soon turned into earsplitting grins when Santa came swaggering in to join the party. Everyone rushed to shake hands with Santa as he let out a jovial “Ha ha ha!” instead of the traditional “ho ho ho” that we are all used to.

330 youths at Catholic youth convention

The youth convention started on November 6 and will conclude on Sunday, November 13.  

The event will also serve to officially mark the close of the Jubilee Year of Mercy in PNG and Solomon Islands.

The Jubilee Year of Mercy, proclaimed by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, started on 8 December 2015 and officially ends with the closing of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica, in the Vatican, on 20 November 2016.  

NCD police ready for FIFA

Speaking to Loop PNG today, NCD metropolitan police commander Ben Turi says operational orders have been given out.

He adds that all of the respective metropolitan stations are now out in full operations to ensure that the FIFA event runs smoothly.

Turi is confident that the city will cooperate to ensure that all visitors are made welcome and enjoy their stay here.

He says foot beats to road checks, as well random vehicle stops, are now being carried out in Port Moresby.

Independence Day fever building up in Port Moresby

A good number of young boys are seen walking around, some standing at traffic lights along the Waigani drive, bus stops and main market areas, giving commuters the opportunity to get a flag for K2 or K5.
