Vanuatu PM meets with seasonal workers during NZ visit

Salwai and his delegation saw employees in their working environment in the early morning visit this week.

The workers are employed under the Recognised Seasonal Workers (RSE) scheme.

Many of the workers were excited to meet PM Salwai for the first time.

Accompanied by Vanuatu’s Minister of Internal Affairs Andrew Napuat, the visit to New Zealand also included meetings with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters and Immigration Minister, Iain Lees-Galloway.

NZ to extend RSE scheme with Vanuatu to fishing sector

RNZI reports the extension followed a pilot project in Tuvalu and Kiribati providing jobs for trained fishermen to work on New Zealand's fishing boats.

Director of Fisheries in Vanuatu, Kalo Paloa, said his government planned to establish a training programme to help workers meet the requirements for recruitment into the sector.

Mr Pakoa said the training program was a priority for the government.
