Fiji cocoa farms receive recovery assistance

The assistance is being made possible through the Increasing Agriculture Commodity Trade (IACT) project TC Winston Recovery Action; a FJD4.3 million initiative funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the Pacific Community (SPC).

 The first recipient, Tomohito Zukoshi, co-founder of Fijiana Cocoa and Adi Chocolate brands, has recently received equipment needed to clear cocoa plantations and improve cocoa productivity.

Pacific Community strengthens ties with peak Asian geoscience body

Strengthened cooperation between the Pacific Community (SPC) and a peak Asian applied geoscience body will further the use of geoscience to guide sustainable development in the Pacific Islands region.

“This new agreement provides SPC an opportunity to work with some of the best applied geoscience organisations in Asia on critical areas for inclusive Pacific development, such as deep sea minerals and geothermal energy,” Prof Petterson said.

Vanuatu and Pacific Community seal sustainable development collaboration

The agreement was signed today by Foreign Minister, Bruno Leingkon Tau, and the Pacific Community Director-General, Dr Colin Tukuitonga.

The development priority areas for Vanuatu outlined in the agreement include the productive sectors, including coastal fisheries, agriculture and forestry, as well as development statistics.

Dr Audrey Aumua appointed as head of the Pacific Community’s Fiji operations

Dr Aumua will lead SPC’s programmes based in Suva, and will be the Director-General’s representative in Fiji.

Dr Aumua is of Fijian descent, and is currently the World Health Organisation (WHO) Resident Representative, based in Honiara, Solomon Islands, where she provides technical and strategic leadership to the government, as well as diplomatic representation for the organisation in Solomon Islands.

Dr Aumua has extensive experience in research, policy development and management in the health and education sectors, in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific region.

Palau state representatives trained on initial damage assessment post disaster

The development of the Initial Damage Assessment form and training is funded by the European Union’s Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific Project which is implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community or SPC.

The training, facilitated by SPC’s Geoscience Division, adopts training materials that have been delivered across the Pacific since 1995 and incorporate the latest thinking in disaster risk management.

Quality management training to boost shipping in the Pacific

It is therefore important that the region looks to continually refine shipping procedures, to improve services and keep pace with the fast growing, highly competitive business environment in order to provide effective and quality services to different end users.  

This week, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) is holding a Quality Management System Training with a number of shipping stakeholders from across the Pacific, including Maritime Administrations, Ports Authorities and Maritime Training Institutions.
