Two months severance pay for Vanuatu teachers

This has been effective since June 3 this year, following approval from the Teaching Service Commission (TSC).

It applies to teachers who reached full retirement age, retire on medical ground, die in service, voluntarily resign and those who completed contract employment period if it is specified in the written contract.

Voluntary resignation applies to officers serving for not less than six consecutive years and resigns in good faith.

Those serving for less than six consecutive years shall not be entitled to service allowance.

‘Resilient and Responsive Education System’ was the theme for the week-long event organised by Malapoa College in collaboration with ViewPX.

For the ICT team in Vanuatu, COVID-19 pandemic is a blessing in disguise, which enabled Malapoa College as one of the major schools in Port Vila to make use of their ICT tools and skills.

With assistance from ViewPX, other schools in Port Vila and the TAFEA team, schools were able to shift from the normal traditional face-face classroom to an online platform via Moodle.

Minister for Education Jean Pierre Nirua commended the teachers for their significant role as educators throughout the nation and he called for recognition and respect to be given and maintained to teachers at all times.

The event at Lamenu Stadium in Tanna coincided with celebrations to commemorate World Teachers Day on 5 October.

Teaching jobs hard to fill in Cook Islands

Twenty two positions are currently being advertised including five jobs for principals and eight jobs at the main secondary school Tereora College.

There are also seven other vacancies at primary and secondary schools in the country.

A Director of Human Resources with the government Terry Utaga says an example of the problem is the field of accounting where potential applicants for an accounting teacher job prefer to stick to higher paying jobs outside teaching.

Vanuatu teachers still waiting for pay

The ministry of education says there is a serious shortage of funds, saying it doesn't have the money to pay for fuel for its vehicles, But it has plans to submit a supplementary budget to cover wages.

Arsen Firiam is the President of the Vanuatu Teacher's Union.

He says teachers are yet to be added to the ministry pay roll, while many older teachers who should have retired are waiting on their retirement payout.
