Deadly Florida Pride parade crash not intentional, police say

Fort Lauderdale police said the 77-year-old driver had ailments that prevented him from walking and had been selected to conduct the lead vehicle.

Preliminary investigation suggests the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly at the start of the event on Saturday.

The driver was taken into custody, but police said no charges had been filed.

Police said he was co-operating with the investigation and that there were no signs that he had consumed drugs or alcohol before the incident, which happened at the Wilton Manors Stonewall event, north of Fort Lauderdale.

The Daily Post Newspaper reports the police saying the driver would be prosecuted under the Traffic Act like any member of the public, but it has not said what charge he will face.

Commissioner, Albert Nalpini, had been reported saying he asked the officer to drive him home after he had had some wine at an official function.

The driver was said to have hit the power pole after he had dropped the commissioner at his home.
