Called Heart On My Sleeve, the track simulates the two stars trading verses about pop star and actress Selena Gomez, who previously dated The Weeknd.

BBC reports the creator, known as @ghostwriter, claims the song was created by software trained on the musician's voices.

"This is just the beginning," they wrote under the song's YouTube video.

"We really are in a new era," responded one listener in the comments. "Can't even tell what's legit or fake anymore."

Adele's highly-anticipated fourth album sold more than five million copies in just two months, said the IFPI.

It was the biggest-selling record on vinyl and CD, the industry body added.

Meanwhile, The Weeknd's moody retro-pop ballad topped the charts in 18 countries, and was streamed 2.15 billion times.

It was the second year running that the Canadian star delivered the world's most popular song.

Last year's chart-topper, Blinding Lights, made the top 10 for a second time in 2021, at number seven.

Last year, the star called organisers "corrupt" after his album After Hours failed to receive a single nomination.

He took particular exception to the so-called "secret committees" who dictate the shortlisted nominees.

On Saturday, the Recording Academy announced they'd been scrapped - but The Weeknd said that was not enough.

"The trust has been broken for so long between the Grammy organisation and artists that it would be unwise to raise a victory flag," said the star, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, in an interview with Variety.

The star, born Abel Tesfaye in Canada, is the son of Ethiopian immigrants.

"My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered," he said.

Fighting between the Ethiopian army and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) began in November and has left millions of people homeless.

The fighting started when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent forces to the Tigray region, after accusing the TPLF of attacking a government military base.

Set at the Raymond James Stadium, the 30-year-old hitmaker appeared on stage in a floating black convertible surrounded by flashing neon signs reminiscent of Sin City.

Emerging from the vehicle, The Weeknd belted out the lyrics to his most infectious hits in front of a sequin-clad robo-choir and an ultra moody cityscape - located high up in the stadium bleachers.

Before diving into the songs off his latest record After Hours, the Grammy Award-winner treated fans to renditions of his earlier hits, such as Starboy and The Hills.

A source told People magazine that things "have been hard for months" for the Gomez, 25, and The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, 27.

"She and Abel have been going back and forth for a few months about their relationship... It's been hard with him being on tour and her shooting in New York. That wasn't easy on them."

The couple first started dating in January, before making their first official debut outing as a couple at the Met Gala in May.
