Election of new Vanuatu President today

An electoral college will meet this morning to elect the president of Vanuatu.

Proceedings will begin at 9am (local time) at the Parliament Chamber in Port Vila.

The process includes the declaration of quorum, explanation of election procedures and the election of 2 scrutinees.

The electoral college which is made up of MPs and provincial chairs will then vote on the candidates.

The members will go through successive rounds of voting until one candidate receives an outright majority of two thirds.

A total of 16 candidates’ names will be put to the vote.

The candidates include former prime ministers, politicians, chiefs, priests, teachers and public servants.

Doroline Laloyer, a pastor and rights advocate, is the lone woman candidate.

The successor will replace President Baldwin Lonsdale, who passed away a fortnight ago.
