Erromango potato programme a success

A large number of people participated in the launch of harvesting of potatoes at Port Narvin on Erromango Island in Vanuatu this week.

Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, Fisheries and Bio-security (MALFFB), Matai Seremaiah told participants that more training will enable students to learn techniques about planting potatoes and other agricultural crops.

He also assured everyone that a tractor would be available soon to help them with farming.

A group of women from the island also thanked the Ministry for introducing them to organic farming techniques that enabled to grow potatoes and other crops.

Mr Seremaiah urged the women to use their skills and provided them with cooking recipes of potato salad, mashed potato, grilled potato and baked potato.

Farmers brought produce that they had planted three months ago under a potato planting project.

Farmers, women and children of Port Narvin Primary School took part in a training during the launch.

Farmers were also provided with carrot and lettuce seeds.

The MALFFB team also encouraged the farmers in East Erromango to produce organic and quality carrots that can meet market demands.

Mr Seremaiah said with more farmers growing, selling and eating the greens, the community is one big step forward to achieving nutrition security

The MALFFB delegation also visited an aquaculture farmer  who has invested in a tilapia fish pond that connects to his taro plots.
