Floods reported in parts of Vanuatu

Parts of Vanuatu continue to be pounded by heavy rain from the category 4 Cyclone Donna.

There are reports of damage to houses and crops in the provinces of Torba, Malampa and Penama.

Ann Sharon Pakoa of Vanuatu Young Women for Change says several people have been evacuated in Port Vila because of rising waters levels in the river.

“People are evacuated using a rope to the come across and stay at Wan Smolbag Theater as an evacuation Centre,” said Pakoa.

The places affected are Black Sand, Anamburu, Seven Star and Holden.

Pakoa says there have been no updates from Torba as yet as communication links with the province went down during the cyclone.

“We lost contact with Torba province and the last news we got was that ten houses were down and people seek refuge in caves,” said Pakoa.

Cyclone Donna is located about 295 kilometres west southwest of Vila and 350 kilometres west of Erromango.

The category four system is approaching New Caledonia with wind gusts of about 200 km/h.

Vanuatu Young Women for Change (VYWC) is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes ‘Equality, Rights and Access to bring about Positive change for Women and young girls in Vanuatu.
