No pay for workers on Vanuatu's Ambae

In Vanuatu, government workers in schools and hospitals on Ambae Island are angry that they have to travel to Santo to withdraw their salaries because the island's bank has not yet resumed services.

Ambae was badly affected by volcanic eruptions during 2017 and 2018, with the island twice evacuated because of the heavy ash fall.

People began returning at the beginning of this year and are building their homes.

Teachers on the island have called the Daily Post newspaper to voice their frustrations at not being able to access their salaries.

They said the cost of travel, first by truck and then boat or plane, is very expensive.
