Vanuatu benefits from vegetable cultivation workshop in China

Twelve farmers and four officers of Vanuatu’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recently completed a course on vegetable cultivation and processing technology for developing countries in China.

The participants from Vanuatu joined trainees from 21 other countries in the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific regions.

Developing the vegetable sector plays an important role in improving people’s food security, nutrition and livelihoods in Vanuatu.

The training was aimed at helping participants improve their country’s vegetable production technology, promote development of the agriculture and look at challenges faced by the sector.

Participants learnt about general cultivation of vegetables focusing on cultivation of pepper, cucumber, melon, pumpkin, eggplant, canopy, corn, cabbage, okra and mushrooms.

They also learnt about soil-less culture technology and how to cook vegetables to obtain their maximum health benefits.

The participants are expected to apply lessons learnt during the course when they return to their home countries.
