Vanuatu Red Cross activates Emergency Operations Centre, branches notified

Vanuatu Red Cross has activated its Emergency Operating Centre (EOC) at its Head Office in Port Vila in response to the threat posed by Tropical Cyclone Donna.

Organisational Development Coordinator Dickinson Tevi says the Red Cross has been attending briefings with the National Disaster Management Office.

Tevi says they have also notified all their branches in the Northern provinces.

During a staff briefing this morning, the Operation Task Force was presented with the strategy and plan to guide Red Cross in this preparatory stage.

The Red Cross has prepositioned stock in each branch to support any emergency.

Tevi says the EOC will operate through the weekend to provide the necessary support as the situation continues to be closely monitored.

According to Vanuatu’s Met Office, very destructive winds, rough seas and heavy rain are currently hammering the northern provinces of Torba and Sanma as Cyclone Donna moves slowly through the area.

A late change in the forecast means Donna is no longer expected to make landfall on any of the main islands in the north.

The system is slowly moving west.
