ANZ shares insights with Vanuatu journalists

ANZ and the Vanuatu Media Association this week collaborated to share insights on understanding finance and writing corporate news at a workshop.

The workshop was facilitated by veteran Australian journalist and Managing Editor of ANZ BlueNotes, Andrew Cornell.

More than a dozen members of the Vanuatu Media Association took time out of their busy schedules to attend the workshop for journalists and other media workers organised by ANZ Vanuatu yesterday, covering the critical and evolving role of corporate journalism, writing corporate news and understanding and reporting on basic financials – and what those stories mean for everyone.

“We’re happy to share our insights with local journalists to help them report on financial matters and local business developments,” said ANZ Vanuatu Country Head, Rufus Pinto.

“We believe that the media plays an important role in informing the public on topical matters related to the financial sector, consequently supporting financial literacy efforts in Vanuatu and the region and connecting readers to local and international business insights,” Mr Pinto said.

“This is an excellent example of partnership to share practical insights, exchange ideas and build capacity for our reporters to help better inform the general public,” Vanuatu Media Association President, Evelyn Toa said. "We thank ANZ Vanuatu for the initiative.”

Mr Cornell said it was vital for journalists to understand finance and not be deterred by numbers because every important story will have a financial background to it.

“Business stories are human stories, stories about society – and that means they should be interesting and easy to understand. It’s been great to work with local journalist on how we can all do a better job,” he said.

Media representatives from the Vanuatu Daily Post, FM107, Buzz FM and The Independent, attended the workshop in Port Vila.

Mr Cornell who is based at ANZ’s Group Headquarters in Melbourne, was at the Australian Financial Review (AFR) for 20 years where he was an associate editor, senior writer and columnist.
