Vanuatu fishermen face fines for outstanding fees

Local fishermen are being warned to pay up their outstanding fees or they will be served with penalty notices and fines.

The warning appeal came from the Principal Monitoring control and Surveillance (MCS) Officer, Yakar Silas following a workshop on MCS on Coastal Fisheries.

Mr Silas appealed to all fishermen around the country to call into the Fisheries Department to sort out any outstanding dues they may have in paying or renewing their licenses to the Vanuatu Government. “Failure to comply with this notice,” he said will result in penalty fines.

The MCS Monitoring Officer made this appeal especially to boats, which have been registered and are in their data system and are selling their fish to the local markets.

He said this is an obligation, which they need to sort out these formalities before they can carry out any fisheries activities.
