Fiji on alert as Cyclone Zena intensifies

All schools and some towns and roads in Fiji are closed as the country prepares for Cyclone Zena.

The storm has intensified over the morning from a category 1 storm to a category 3 storm, with winds of 120km/h close to its centre, gusting to 130km/h.

The west of Fiji has been deluged with rain since Sunday and now strong winds are forecast.

RNZ lnternational's Sally Round is in the Fijian city of Lautoka.

She said the cyclone shutters were going up again around Lautoka, six weeks after Cyclone Winston, which killed 44.

Many people still in devastated homes after the category 5 storm are not so lucky.

They have been told to head to higher ground or evacuation centres as more rain, very high tides and high winds are forecast.

Zena has been tracking towards the south of the main island Viti Levu, and the Fiji met service said the storm was intensifying as it headed towards the country.
