Large quake north of New Zealand

A large earthquake has hit off the coast of New Zealand.

Geonet seismologist John Ristau said the magnitude 6.6 quake was centered about 850 kilometres north of Whakatane, at a depth of 360km.

There had been more than 150 reports from people who felt the quake in New Zealand, Ristau said.

However, there were unlikely to be aftershocks and there was no tsunami risk, he said.

Geonet initially reported the event as three separate quakes in the Bay of Plenty region.

Ristau said deep quakes off the coast were often recorded by Geonet's automatic system as multiple quakes.

These separate quakes have since been removed from Geonet's website.

People across the North Island took to social media to talk about the shaky morning.

People in Wellington and Palmerston North were among those who felt the quake.
