Sudden promotion for Vanuatu on the World Cricket League ladder

The Vanuatu team is preparing for life in World Cricket League Division 5 and a six-team tournament in May

This after being promoted when the small South American country of Suriname withdrew over allegations it fielded ineligible players in the Division 6 competition last year.

Vanuatu lost to Suriname in the semi-finals and finished third in that competition.

It's now been invited to take the place of Suriname in the Division 5 round-robin that will be hosted by Jersey, and also features Tanzania, Nigeria, Guernsey and Oman.

Vanuatu's national coach, Shane Deitz, says while the ICC were initially reluctant to do anything about the Suriname issue, he's glad that they took action, and that Vanuatu has been promoted as a result.

“At that time they just wanted to I think to see the completion play out hopefully to not go through that as they end up winning it, Deitz told ABC.

“We and other teams pushed for investigation and an investigation took place and the outcome they were withdrawn I think the best way to put it and we have been promoted which is fantastic for us and the right result for us in the end for cricket I think.”
