Total Beauty mistakes Whoopi Goldberg for Oprah Winfrey at the Oscars

The Oscars red carpet has been home to some of the biggest fashion blunders, but mistaking Whoopi Goldberg for Oprah Winfrey amid a diversity storm takes the cake.

Los Angeles company Total Beauty mixed up the celebs in a cringeworthy tweet, with a photo of the actress - thinking she was the media mogul.

"We had no idea @Oprah was #tatted and we love it. #Oscars," Total Beauty tweeted, before the post was swiftly deleted.

Twitter was flooded with snide responses, using the hashtag #ThatsNotOprah.

The mistake followed the #OscarsSoWhite firestorm, which saw vocal criticism of a lack of nominations for non-white actors.

Several black stars boycotted the event over the lack of diversity, while Oscars host Chris Rock made plenty of fun at the Academy's expense, calling the event "the White People's Choice Awards".

Holly Robinson Peete took a screenshot of the original tweet, expressing her disappointment the company couldn't tell two black women apart: "Come on @TotalBeauty There are only a few of us there smh."

"How is it that people can tell apart Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, but not Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg?" Courtney Milan tweeted.

The company, however, nailed its apology, tweeting: "We'd like to apologize to Oprah and Whoopi, as well as everyone we've offended. It was our error, and there are no excuses. We're sorry."

It followed up with a generous pledge: "Using this #Oscars #SNAFU as an opportunity to donate $10k to @whoopigoldberg & @oprah's charity of choice.#ThatsNotOprah #WeMeanIt."
