Women market vendors and survivors of domestic violence in Vanuatu are the centre of attention today as the country marks International Women's Day 2016.
A public exhibition of photos and stories of the hardships experienced by women across the country both in the wake of Cyclone Pam and as victims and survivors of domestic violence was launched in the capital Port Vila.
President of the Silae Vanua Market Vendors association Eslin Solomon said she believed economic empowerment for women was crucial to addressing many of the issues faced by women in Vanuatu.
"There are a lot of women and girls that are left behind when they don't complete their education they are left behind and have nothing to do. So they exposed to crimes and violence in their homes so this is where we really need help to go back and help these women who have been left behind. Who are unable to generate their own income or start their own businesses to improve their lives," said Eslin Solomon.
