Want to reduce the risk of getting cancer?

Healthy eating is a first step in reducing your cancer risk.

This was one of the main topics discussed during the Men’s Cancer Awareness Workshop earlier this week.

Renowned Australian oncologist, Professor Ian Olver, said poor eating habits increase your risk of cancer in various parts of the body.

“Poor eating habits can also contribute to weight gain and being overweight or obese increase your risk of cancer.”

Prof Olver says improving diet can be as simple as trying to eat more fruit and vegetables, adding that processed food can increase ones chance of developing cancer.

“Doing little or no physical activity is associated with a higher risk of developing certain types of cancer,” says Prof Olver.

He says physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. There is evidence to suggest that the more exercise you do, the lower your risk, especially if this is at least 40 minutes of moderate exercise each day.

“Other risk factors include the consumption of smoke, betelnut and alcohol.

“The more you consume, the greater your risk of getting cancer,” Prof Olver says.
