Bye week comes at the right time for Hurricanes as niggles creep in

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd is welcoming his side's upcoming bye.

After an impressive 41-15 win over the Highlanders on Saturday night, you may have thought the desire to keep up momentum would be strong.

But the sight of captain Dane Coles with an icepack strapped to his right knee, lock Michael Fatialofa sporting a limp and Matt Proctor sustaining a head knock late in the game meant Boyd felt it was a good time for a break.

"I think it's a nice time for us to have one.

"We've got a development game against the Crusaders' Knights on Saturday, so the guys that are lightly raced and had smaller minutes will play in that game and the guys that have had high minutes will play a round of golf with the alumni on Tuesday and then have the weekend off."

None of those injuries appeared serious, but having a week off will ensure they are properly rested.

The team may also welcome back the likes of prop Loni Uhila and outside back Cory Jane from injuries when they front up the the Reds in Brisbane on April 1.

That kicks off a run of three games against Australian opposition and one against the Blues before they get their second bye of the season.

It led Boyd to bring up what was the most hated word in the New Zealand rugby lexicon a few years back: rotation.

"That dirty rotation word that everyone used to get upset about, I think we're starting to understand over the course of a season you need to keep more than 23 guys bubbling away.

"Over the next three or four weeks we'll bring some of the guys who have played lesser minutes in and do some bits and pieces. There won't be any wholesale change, but I think you notice everybody is making little subtle tweaks to keep minutes tidy."

As for the win on Saturday, Boyd was particularly impressed with the form of second-five Ngani Laumape, blindside flanker Brad Shields and young fullback Jordie Barrett.

Laumape finished two very good tries, including one where he ran over the top of incumbent All Blacks fullback Ben Smith on his way to the tryline.

The 23-year-old is in his second season with the Hurricanes after signing from the New Zealand Warriors in rugby league and Boyd said his progression has been immense.

"I think Ngani has had four terrific performances in a row, simply for him he's just worked really hard off-season.

"Last year he came to us and he could have been in better nick, and you've also got to remember he's been playing the other code [rugby league] for a few years, so it's probably taken him a little bit of time to get back into the game, but he's worked incredibly hard in the off-season with his skills and his conditioning."

The same went for Shields, Boyd said.

"I thought Brad had a wonderful game and he's another one that worked incredibly hard in the off-season. I know he's determined to get his tackle accuracy a little bit higher, I know he's currently running in the mid-90s."
