Mexico enters quarterfinals

​Mexico has made it through to the quarter finals of the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup underway in Port Moresby.

They defeated Venezuela 3-2 in a close encounter at the Bava Park in front of 2076 supporters.

Mexico scored through Kiana Palacios and Teresa Gonzalez.

Venezuela scored both goals in the second half through Gabriela Garcia and Lourdes Moreno.

Mexico's forward, Kiana Palacios, scored a double to help her team take lead at half-time.

Mexico dominated the game, having more ball possession.

The girls in green and white made 22 attempts with 7 on target and 8 off target.

Palacios' first goal, four minutes into the game, was a superb header taken off a corner kick straight into the net, surprising Venezuela goalkeeper Franyely Rodriguez.

The Mexican number nine's second goal in this match and her third in the overall tournament came in at the 10th minute to extend the lead 2-0.

Palacios made a clear sweep from the right straight past goalkeeper Rodriguez.

Mexico held on until the whistle blew at half-time.

Mexico entered the second half scoring early 3-0 through Gonzalez, eight minutes into the second half.

Venezuela fought back to score their first goal through Garcia 3-1, a minute after she was taken off the bench.

The girls in lime green and maroon continued their strong attack, scoring their second goal 3-2 through Moreno in the 83rd minute.

Mexico's strong defence prevented Venezuela from scoring more goals until the final whistle blew.

Venezuela has now bowed out of the tournament.
