Team Vanuatu well into training schedule in China

Team Vanuatu has six weeks of training left in China before returning home for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games.

The team which comprises of 190 athletes from boxing, archery, beach volleyball, judo, table tennis, athletics, female football, karate and taekwondo has been training four hours a day for the past three months in China.

The training comes under the Vanuatu Sport Technical Support Project.

Archery coach Francis Runa said their training is very tough.

He said they train in different stages starting from elastic training to shooting on the range of 30-50 metre.

Runa said based on their training, he is 100 per cent sure the athletes will prove themselves by winning medals in the Pacific Mini Games.

Taekwondo coach Rocky Sevu also expressed the same sentiment saying training standards in China are very tough.

“We have six boys, three of them are senior and others are junior.

“From my experience there is big difference and improvement in the teams and we hope whatever we learn in China will develop the sport back in our country,” he said.

Sevu said his boys have participated in two tournaments as part of the training programme and the results are impressive.

Media relations officer Rojet Kon in his observation said every day is always another day of pain but it’s always another day of gain too for the athletes.

Vanuatu as the host of the Pacific Mini Games is sending a strong message to other Pacific countries that they are well prepared for the event.

The athletes are aiming to win medals not only for their federations but for the country as well.

The Pacific Mini Games will be hosted in Port Villa in December 4-15 and 24 countries are expected to compete in 14 sports.
