Australia and New Zealand to pursue 'TPP 12 minus one'

The US-led 12-nation agreement was set to cover 40% of the world's economic output.

Pulling out of the TPP was one of Mr Trump's first executive orders and fulfils a long-held campaign promise.

Australia has already devised a name for a possible new agreement: TPP 12 Minus One.

The country's trade minister Steve Ciobo said Australia would not abandon the TPP just because it would require "a little bit of elbow grease" to keep it alive.

The Australian Muslim MP fighting the trolls

Dr Mehreen Faruqi is an Australian Greens Party MP in the New South Wales Upper House, and a former environmental engineer, who fled an "oppressive regime in Pakistan" in 1992 with her husband and infant son.

But she has found herself facing a grotesque cascade of abuse unleashed by internet trolls.

"There is this real vile mix of racism and sexism that is happening within Australia from certain people who don't believe I belong to this country, maybe because of my colour or the religion that I belong to. That is pretty upsetting," Dr Faruqi told the BBC in Sydney.

Man killed by crocodile in Australia's Northern Territory

The man, 47, was wading across Cahill's Crossing near Kakadu National Park when he was taken by the 3.3m (11ft) reptile, police said.

Two women made it across the river before realising the man was missing.

His body was found 2km (1.2 miles) downstream on Thursday night, police said. The crocodile was shot and killed.

Local media reported he was from a nearby remote community.

Japanese ship caught with slaughtered whale in Australian waters - Sea Shepherd

A Sea Shepherd helicopter spotted the vessel yesterday, with two harpoon ships nearby.

"They're hit with an explosive harpoon that goes straight into their body, hooks come out and shrapnel is sent through their body, it's a terrible bloody death … these whales can take up to 30 or 40 minutes to die," Jeff Hansen from Sea Shepherd said.

The marine conservation group said the Japanese crew quickly covered the whale with a tarpaulin.

Australia joins World Bank economic initiatives in Vanuatu

SBS reports a new pilot project funded in part by the Australian government hopes to give the industry a boost -- by helping local producers reach more international buyers.

In the tropics, vegetation grows back fast.

Even so, it took six months for the sandalwood plantation Stevel Nilwo runs near Port Vila to return to full strength after Cyclone Pam hit in March 2015.

Intense cleanse, weight loss, kick-start: Will a detox diet really rid your body of toxins and make you healthier?

Promising to rid your body of the "toxins" resulting from poor diet and lifestyle, the claim is these diets will leave you cleansed and revitalised — and perhaps a few kilos lighter to boot.

But do these programs, which often involve consuming expensive powders and potions, really do anything to improve your health?

Australian fast bowler becomes No.1

Hazlewood snared 32 wickets in six Tests on home soil against South Africa and Pakistan to be ranked the third on the bowling rankings - behind Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

Sri Lanka tweaker Rangana Herath came in fourth with South African quick Dale Steyn fifth - meaning Hazlewood ranks as the premier fast bowler.

Hazlewood's new ball partner Mitchell Starc was 10th on the list and also ranked 7th out of the Test all-rounders.

Having babies really does change women's brains

This week, she asks: could so-called 'baby brain' actually be a helpful affliction? Is it time for women doctors to ask for a pay rise? And, when will Australia give three-parent babies the green light?

The upside of 'baby brain'

I'm definitely not the first woman to think she's lost her mind after having a baby, and thanks to the kind people at Nature Neuroscience, I can now rest assured that not only is this totally normal but, ultimately, helpful.

Indonesia 'not suspending' all military ties with Australia

On Wednesday the military said all forms of co-operation were on hold, with things needing "to be improved".

But Wiranto, who goes by one name, said the suspension related only to a language-training programme.

The row relates to "teaching materials" at an Australian army language facility, officials say.

Indonesia's military chief said the materials included "unethical stuff" that discredited the military.

Mosquito-borne virus prompts warning in Australia

Ross River virus infected 314 people in Victoria in 2016, nearly a 50% increase on the year before, said the state's chief health officer Charles Guest.

Prof Guest suggested stagnant water from recent heavy rain created conditions ripe for mosquito breeding.

The virus, found in Australia and some Pacific nations, can cause joint pain, fatigue and muscle aches.

Current treatments only target symptoms, which can last for months.

"The best protection from these diseases is to avoid mosquito bites," Prof Guest said in a statement.
