Fiji prepares for second cyclone

Tropical Cyclone Bina formed to the northwest of the country and its centre is forecast to go between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

It is expected to remain a category 1 system.

TC Bina was named less than a day after category 2 system TC Ana unleashed her fury on Fiji.

One person drowned and five people are reported missing.

Among the missing are four fishermen and a three-year-old toddler who went with his grandfather to tie up their boat.

More than 7000 people are sheltering in evacuation centres after heavy rain and high seas caused flooding.

TC Ana is region’s first cyclone for 2021

The category 1 cyclone was located about 350km northwest of Nadi early this morning.

Its moving southeast at 20km/hr and is likely to make landfall over Fiji on Sunday.

The National Disaster Management Office in Fiji has warned the public to prepare for heavy rain, flooding and possible damaging winds.

A national curfew comes into effect this afternoon and will be lifted at 4am on Monday (local time).

The curfew in the western division is from 12pm today to 4am Monday.

Cyclone Yasa aftermath: 'widespread destruction'

While the cyclone had weakened to a category 1 during Saturday afternoon, the disaster management office confirmed the death toll had risen to four. And it had caused widespread damage since hitting Fiji on Friday, particularly in the northern areas and the island of Vanua Levu.

Save the Children Fiji chief executive Shairana Ali said Kia Island, north of Vanua Levu had "basically been completely devastated".

"Judging by the pictures it looks like it's a warzone. We don't know yet if there are injuries," she said.

Cyclone forms between Vanuatu and Fiji

Tropical Cyclone Yasa is a Category 1 storm, which is expected to strengthen to a Category 3 within the next two days.

The system is moving in a south-westerly direction before it is expected to turn towards the northwest and by Thursday to be back to today's position.

At this stage, there is no forecast of where the system might be making a landfall.

Meanwhile, a tropical low north of Tonga's Vava'u islands is forecast to intensify and turn into a cyclone by tonight.

TC Harold could further intensify and move towards Vanuatu

At 11am local time, Tropical Cyclone Harold (990hPa) Cat1 moved into Vanuatu's area of responsibility and was located near 10.8S 161.1E. Tropical Cyclone

The latest alert said Harold is positioned at the bottom left of square letter A of the Vanuatu Tropical Cyclone Tracking Map.

This is about 195KM southeast of Honiara. In the past 6 hours, the system was moving in an east southeasterly direction at 34KM/HR.

Gale force winds of 70KM/HR increasing to 90KM/HR are expected within 85 Nautical miles from its centre.
