Chris Brown denies alleged battery after Las Vegas police confirm investigation

Police were called to the Palms Casino Resort on Saturday morning (local time), after an alleged altercation with Liziane Gutierrez at a private party.

Gutierrez said she was struck by Brown and that he had taken her cellphone, police said. Detectives tried to speak with Brown at his hotel room, but the singer left before police had arrived.

Lieutenant Jeff Goodwin says authorities received a call shortly before 10.30am on Saturday (Nevada time) about the alleged battery at the Palms Casino Resort.

Goodwin would not release any details about the allegation, saying the investigation is still going on.

Brown caused a stir when he announced plans to visit New Zealand, with anti-violence groups speaking out against his trip because of his conviction for assaulting a former partner. But he gained the support of several high-profile Maori women.

He was due to perform in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth from 9 December as part of his 'One Hell of a Nite' tour and in Auckland on 18 December.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) area manager Michael Carley said the department would assess whether there were any character issues that might affect Brown's eligibility for a visa.

"INZ is committed to delivering the fastest possible service for visa applicants," he said.

"Processing times will always depend on the complexity of an application, but INZ expects to make its decision well in time before Brown's scheduled concert appearance in Auckland."

Michaelia Cash, who was assistant minister for Immigration and Border Protection before a Cabinet reshuffle this week, said she would recommend that Immigration Minister Peter Dutton refuse the 25-year-old American a visa on character grounds.

"People need to understand if you are going to commit domestic violence and then you want to travel around the world, there are going to be countries that say to you: 'You cannot come in because you are not of the character we expect in Australia,'" Cash, who is now minister for women, told reporters.
