Dubai becomes first city to get its own Microsoft font

The typeface, designed with Microsoft, comes in both Latin and Arabic script, and will be available in 23 languages.

Government bodies have been told to use it in official correspondence.

But given the human rights record of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, eyebrows will be raised at claims it is a font of "self-expression".

'Create harmony'

Dubai's Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed al-Maktoum said he had been personally involved in "all the stages" of the development of the font.

Emirates plane crash-lands at Dubai airport

All 300 people on board were able to escape from the burning aircraft, but a firefighter was killed tackling the blaze.

The Boeing 777 appeared to have landed on its belly, and images showed thick black smoke rising into the sky.

Emirates chairman Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum paid tribute to the firefighter who lost his life fighting the blaze.

The aircraft was flying to Dubai from the southern Indian state of Kerala.

Flights to and from the airport were suspended for several hours but have now resumed.

Originally introduced at the Dubai International Boat Show in 2015, the Floating Seahorse villas are unlike anything you've seen.

For starters, the villas float like anchored boats -- albeit without listing from side to side.

Dubai has fireworks despite nearby tower blaze

A huge fire broke out in the high-rise The Address Hotel in downtown Dubai in the United Arab Emirates close to the world's tallest skyscraper Burj Khalifa, where the fireworks display took place.

Burning debris fell from the 300m tall building as firefighters arrived at the scene. Officials say the fire has been brought largely under control, while an investigation into what caused the blaze is underway.

Islamic State extremists control parts of Syria and Iraq and have welcomed thousands of foreign fighters into their ranks.

South African tax authorities say five passengers carrying the cash were detained while boarded an Emirates flight at Johannesburg's main international airport on Aug. 28.
