Former PNG football coach set to take charge of Fiji

The Danish national coached the PNG Kapuls for 18 months, a period highlighted by a runners-up finish in the 2016 OFC Nations Cup, where they lost the final on penalties against New Zealand.

Serritslev left PNG three months before the end of his contract, after the PNGFA failed to pay him for the final year of his tenure, and is currently based in Armenia.

The 72-year-old, who has also had spells in charge of the Denmark and Armenian Under-21 sides, is set to replace former Fiji head coach Christophe Gamel who resigned in August last year.

Fiji hopes to boost women's football with equal pay

FFA chief executive Mohammed Yusuf hoped to develop women's football in the country and said providing equal pay was a step forward.

"It will encourage Fijian girls to come and play football because, you know, Fiji women are also in the rugby 7s and 15s with the Fijiana, so hopefully we can encourage these people to come and join us," he said.

The Association also expected to appoint a national futsal coach soon - pending the Fiji Sports Commission decision on funding the position.

Positive start for Vanuatu and Fiji

Heading into the match to grab all three points, Vanuatu started the match against Papua New Guinea on the front foot in the opening 10 minutes.

New Zealand base Azariah Soromon connected his head with a Bong Kalo cross from the right to put Vanuatu in front inside the first three minutes.

The early goal swings the momentum in Vanuatu’s way as they controlled more of the ball possession.

Papua New Guinea responded after conceding the goal with some encouraging attacking moves which lack the end product.

Fiji Football searching for new head coach

In a statement the association confirmed Gamel quit last week citing personal reasons.

Fiji Football president Rajesh Patel praised Gamel for lifting the country's FIFA world ranking from 189 to 163.

Patel said Gamel's last outing with the national teams was for the Pacific Games campaign in July which saw bronze medal finishes for both the Fiji men's and women's teams.

Goalkeeper coach Xavier Henneusse, who was brought in by Christophe Gamel, will also be leaving with Gamel at the end of the month.
