Fiji 7s and Fijiana settle for Silver medal in Birmingham

Fiji’s wait for a gold medal in 7s continues.

Blitzbok raced to an early lead and pressured the national side to making many unforced errors.

Muller Du Plessis ran in two tries to help his side.

The other tries were scored by JC Pretorious and Shaun Williams as they led 17-0 at half time.

Skipper Waisea Nacuqu scored the lone try for Fiji in the second spell but it wasn’t enough as South Africa proved too strong in defense.

Naikore scores hat-trick as Fiji wins its second tournament match

The Fijiana defeated Tonga 34-7.

Naikore opened the scoring for the side in the 10th minute for a 5-0 lead.

Tonga hit back after Fijiana winger Kolora Lomani was sinbinned for foul play, seeing captain Mele Hufanga scoring a converted try for a 7-5 lead.

But Fiji hit back with a second try to Naikore just two minutes later seeing the national side lead 10-7 at the break.

Fijiana dominated the second spell with Naikore completing a hat-trick.

     

Fijiana set new world record win

It's the biggest ever win by points in a rugby match between two national representative teams, breaking the former record held by the Wallabies in their 142-0 win over Namibia in 2003 in the men's Rugby World Cup.

Papua New Guinea next play Samoa, who come off the back of a 25-17 win over Tonga.

Fiji have already qualified for the Rugby World Cup next year while Samoa seek to qualify in a repecharge tournament later this year.

 

Fijiana 7s gearing up for final finish at Dubai 7s

Fijiana defeated Great Britain 28-5 to top its pool and set up the fixture against Australia.

It was the first time the Fijiana 7s side played at a final of the World Rugby Sevens Series leg.

Coach Saiasi Fuli said the first tournament was an historical event for the women's team.

"The girls know it's an historical achievement for them to reach the first ever final for the past 12 years participating in this world sevens series," he said.

Fijiana creates history after winning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics

It’s the first time that Fiji has won two medals at the same Games.

The Fijiana which has been the story of the women’s competition defeated Great Britain 21-12.

The national side beat 2016 bronze medalists Canada in pool play, knocked Rio champions Australia out of the quarter-final before losing to world champions New Zealand in extra time in the semifinal.

Fiji was leading 14-5 at the break.

Coach Saiasi Fuli reminded the players to maintain their discipline at halftime and told them to be careful of the offside line.

Brave Fijiana loses to NZ in semifinals

The game had to into extra time with scores locked 17-all at full time.

However, the Fijiana still has a chance to win a medal as they’ll feature in the bronze playoff at 8:30 (Fiji Time) tonight.

Some casual play by the Fijiana gifted New Zealand with an unconverted try in the first half.

Fiji playing with so much confidence got their act together and a break was made by Aloesi Nakoci who put Reapi Uluinasau into space.

Fijiana books semifinal spot after creating major upset

It is a historical moment for the Fijiana as they’re now in contention for a medal.

The side will meet New Zealand in the semifinal at 2pm (Fiji Time) today.

Aloesi Nakoci struck first after two minutes following some patient buildup up for a 7-nil lead.

Fiji went to a 14-nil lead when Ana Maria Naimasi sliced through the Australian defense to dot down between the sticks.

However, the Fijiana was reduced to six players when Vasiti Solikoviti was sent off for a high tackle.

Fijiana to face England in Rugby World Cup debut

 

The Fijiana will face the 2014 world champions in the second match of a triple-header in Auckland on 18 September.

The other two teams in Pool C, France and South Africa, will square off in the opening clash at Eden Park before Fiji run out against the world top-ranked women's team, who finished runners up to the Black Ferns at the 2017 Rugby World Cup.

Tournament hosts New Zealand will face Trans-Tasman rivals Australia in the feature match, with organisers aiming to set a new match attendance record.

Former Wallaroos player to help coach Fijiana

Thomas takes on the role of defence and skills coach as part of the Rugby World Cup Coaching Internship Programme, which is supported part of the International Olympic Committee's international development grant to World Rugby.

The former Wallaroo playmaker will join newly-appointed head coach Senirusi Seruvakula and the wider management team as the Fijiana prepare to compete in their first-ever Rugby World Cup.

"I am extremely excited to be appointed as an assistant coach of the Fijiana 15s team and take part in the World Rugby Coaching Internship Programme, Thomas said.

Fiji change coach ahead of Women's Rugby World Cup

The experienced mentor guided the Fijian Drua to the Australian National Rugby Championship title in 2018 and has also coached the Fijian Latui in Global Rapid Rugby and the Fiji Warriors.

Fiji Rugby CEO John O'Connor said Seruvakula had been offered the head coaching role following a tough interview process.

"We have given Senirusi a few days to consider the offer and advise us on his decision, after which the Board and management will consider the next course of action."
