Vanuatu chiefs welcome presidential pardon

The chiefs from Port Olry in Santo, Lounelapen (Tanna) and Melsisi (Pentecost) said their people are happy with the decision taken by President, Tallis Obed Moses, to relieve the former PM’s of their convictions, despite political reactions from some political leaders.

Chief Eloi Taris, Chief Georges Nakat and Chief Joseph Viretamarin said the President had only performed his constitutional role to pardon them and nothing else, reports the Vanuatu Daily Post.

Former Prime Ministers Serge Vohor, Joe Natuman and Charlot Salwai were pardoned by the President last week.

Former Fiji Prime Ministers and politicians taken in for questioning by CID officers

Rabuka was taken in by Police on Sunday night while Chaudhry was taken in for questioning yesterday afternoon.

National Federation Party Leader Professor Biman Prasad, NFP President Pio Tikoduadua, SODELPA MP’s Lynda Tabuya, Adi Litia Qionibaravi and Ro Filipe Tuisawau and Unity Fiji Leader Savenaca Narube were also detained on Sunday night for questioning.

Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed the report saying they were questioned for their statements on a Bill to amend the iTaukei Land Trust Act.
