UN says at least 1,332 Iraqis killed by violence in July

The U.N. mission to Iraq said that at least 844 civilians were among the dead, while 488 members of Iraqi security forces and pro-government militias fighting the Islamic State group were killed.

It put the number of the wounded at 2,108. Baghdad was the worst affected province with 335 people killed.

NATO agrees on support package for Iraq

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the aid program, approved Friday by NATO member nations, is designed to help Iraq by providing support in areas where NATO "is best placed to add value."

Stoltenberg said the assistance program was developed at Iraq's request, and in close consultation with Iraqi authorities.

Iraqi PM speaks out against Turkish airstrikes

In a three-part message posted on his official Twitter account Tuesday, al-Abadi said that the council is committed "not to allow any attack on Turkey from Iraqi territory and called on Turkey to respect good relations."

Turkey launched a wave of airstrikes in Iraq last week targeting militants with the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, in the country's northwest.

The strikes in Iraq targeted the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, whose affiliates have been effective in battling the Islamic State group. 

The strikes further complicate the U.S.-led war against the extremists, which has relied on Kurdish ground forces making gains in Iraq and Syria.
