Iraqi forces retake Mosul airport

The airport -- largely destroyed by ISIS forces -- is now fully under Iraqi Federal Police control, said Col. Abdel Amir Mohamed, commander of the Rapid Response Unit of the Federal Police.

Iraq starts operation to drive ISIS out of west Mosul

The operation comes weeks after Iraqi forces recaptured eastern Mosul across the Tigris River. On the first day of the new offensive, Iraqi Federal Police forces said they killed 79 ISIS militants, destroyed weapons facilities and regained control of 10 villages.

The prime minister described the operation as a "new dawn" in the liberation of Mosul, ISIS' last major stronghold in the country.

"Go forward with my blessing, heroic forces of Iraq," he said on state television.

The city has seen many of its irreplaceable antiquities, monuments and historic sites destroyed since the terror group first occupied it in May 2015.

Russia's Defense Ministry released a statement Monday saying they have detected "an upsurge in truck movement" near the ancient site that indicates that ISIS is planning to cause even more damage to the ancient complex.

Former US National Guard soldier jailed for IS support

Mohamed Jalloh, 27, a naturalised US citizen, pleaded guilty in October 2016 to providing material support to a foreign terrorist organisation.

Jalloh told investigators he had also tried to travel to Libya and considered a shooting attack against US soldiers.

In September 2016, another soldier was sentenced for supporting the group.

Former National Guard specialist Hasan Edmonds was given 30 years in prison for planning an attack against soldiers at the Joliet Armory in Illinois.

Facebook, Google, Twitter accused of enabling ISIS

The suit claims that the three companies allowed ISIS access to its social networks for spreading terrorist propaganda, raising money and luring recruits. (The gunman who killed 49 people at the Orlando nightclub in June had repeatedly referenced ISIS.)

Most wanted: $25M reward for ISIS leader

The Department of State released a statement Friday announcing the $25 million dollar reward for the self proclaimed caliph of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria -- more than doubling the reward announced previously.

"The threat that al-Baghdadi poses has increased significantly since the Department of State's initial $10 million reward offer for information leading to his location, arrest, or conviction was announced in 2011," the department's Rewards for Justice Program said on its website.
