Russia defends its military action in Syria

The claim of agreement with Washington came amid conflicting reports about Russia's intentions in Syria and whether it is targeting only Islamic State and al-Qaida-linked militants.

The U.S. and its allies fear that Russia, which has backed the family of President Bashar Assad since the current leader's father was in power, is using the air campaign as a pretext to go after anti-Assad rebels that include CIA-backed groups.

Russian Defence Ministry Igor Konashenkov said in televised comments that Russian aircraft have damaged or destroyed 12 targets in Syria belonging to the Islamic State group including a command centre and two ammunition depots.

Officials acknowledged, however, that other unidentified groups were being targeted as well.

Russia confirms start of airstrikes in Syria

Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told Russian news agencies on Wednesday that Russian jets are carrying out targeted airstrikes on the positions, vehicles and warehouses that Russia believes belong to IS militants.

Russia's upper chamber of parliament earlier on Wednesday gave the green light to President Vladimir Putin's request to send Russian troops to Syria.

Iraqi military and security officials said attacks in Anbar involved at least two suicide bombers that targeted a military outpost in the volatile province, which fell to the IS group during the Islamic State's blitz last year.

The suicide bomber blew himself up inside the mosque during the evening call to prayers, while the car bomb exploded outside an entrance, they said. Medical officials said the death toll may rise with people now in operating rooms in several hospitals.

Witnesses said the car bomb exploded while people were carrying out the wounded from inside the mosque, adding to the casualties.

Pentagon: IS hacker killed in US strike also was recruiter

A spokesman for Central Command, Air Force Col. Patrick Ryder, told reporters at the Pentagon on Friday that the hacker, Junaid Hussain, also was responsible for the recent release of personally identifying information on about 1,300 U.S. military and government employees and sought to inspire violence against U.S. service members.

Ryder called Hussain a key IS member. He said he was killed Monday in an airstrike in Raqqa, the city the Islamic State group considers its capital.

Islamic State suicide attacks targeting Iraqi outpost kill 8

The assault west of Anbar's provincial capital, Ramadi, involved three vehicles, including two fuel trucks, officials said. The outpost housed a joint contingent of army soldiers, policemen and allied Sunni militiamen, they said.

Official: Islamic State ambushes, kills up to 50 Iraq troops

Sabah Al-Karhout, president of the Anbar Provincial Council, told The Associated Press the ambushes took place Friday west of the provincial capital, Ramadi, but said he had no more details. There was no immediate word from federal authorities or the Islamic State group.

The Islamic State group controls much of the vast Anbar province, including Ramadi and the city of Fallujah.

White House: No. 2 IS leader killed in US military strike

National Security Council spokesman Ned Price says Fadhil Ahmad al-Hayali was traveling in a vehicle near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul when he was killed Tuesday.

As the senior deputy to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, al-Hayali was the primary coordinator for moving large amounts of weapons, explosives, vehicles and people between Iraq and Syria.
