As the music blares from tinny-sounding speakers, a heart-rending story about a deaf man and his daughter begins. The daughter is struck down with a terrible illness and is rushed to hospital. The man, unable to communicate that he is her father, is not allowed past the reception desk. The film ends with him crying inconsolably as she dies alone.

She became Japan's first ever female defense minister in 2007, and a year later became the first woman to run for leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. And, earlier this month, she was elected Tokyo's first ever female governor by a landslide.

But breaking through hasn't always been easy. In Japan, she says the glass ceiling is more like steel -- and now she wants to help women beneath it.

"The potential of Japan is so enormous," she told CNN in an interview in her Tokyo office.

Fumio Kishida said he had called China's ambassador to protest against the "incursions".

On Friday, about 230 Chinese fishing boats and coast guard vessels sailed near islands claimed by both countries.

Beijing has been increasingly assertive about waters it believes are Chinese.

The Japan-controlled, uninhabited islands - known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China - are the source of a long-running dispute.

Tokyo says the fleet included six coastguard ships, three of which appeared to be armed.

Japan has summoned Chinese diplomats to protest.

Over recent years, Beijing has become increasingly assertive about its rights in waters it believes are Chinese.

Testing Japan's resolve

In this latest incident, Chinese boats sailed close to the Senkaku Islands, which are administered by Japan but also claimed by China. Beijing calls them the Diaoyu Islands.

Amid a flurry of social media excitement, Niantic Labs, the software company behind the game, announced it was "finally broadcasting" in Japan.

First released in the US, Australia and New Zealand on 6 July and now available in more than 30 countries, the game has been a global phenomenon.

The Japanese launch comes with a McDonalds sponsorship deal.

The man was carrying no proof of identity when he was found in the city of Nagato on Saturday.

Police are expected to hand him over to immigration officials who will decide whether he is a genuine defector.

In 2011, nine North Koreans were picked up by the Japanese coastguard after spending five days at sea.

They later settled in South Korea.

Some 29,000 North Koreans have fled the country since the peninsula was divided at the end of the Korean War in the 1950s, many of them crossing the border into China.

North Korea launched two missiles within hours of each other, with one flying about 400km (250 miles) and reaching an altitude of 1,000km.

A confirmed successful test would mark a step forward for North Korea after four failed launches in recent months.

South Korea, the US and Nato have also expressed alarm over the latest tests.

Both launches are believed to have been intermediate-range Musudan missiles, whose range of about 3,000km is enough to hit South Korea, Japan and the US territory of Guam in the Western Pacific

The Kyodo news agency says about 40 people are being treated at a hospital in Kumamoto, some of them seriously injured, and the government says at least 19 buildings have collapsed. At least two deaths occurred in the town of Mashiki, where the shaking was most severe. The town lies 15km east of Kumamoto.
