Kate and Gerry McCann said it reflected progress in the investigation, adding they still hoped to be reunited with Madeleine, who went missing in 2007.

Portuguese prosecutors made Christian Brueckner an "arguido" on Thursday, but did not formally reveal his name.

Brueckner has not been charged and denies any involvement in the case.

Madeleine disappeared during a family holiday in Praia da Luz and investigators believe she was abducted from the apartment where the family were staying in the Algarve resort.

Police believe the man, now in jail for a sex crime, was in the area where the girl, then aged three, was last seen.

Madeleine's parents Gerry and Kate McCann thanked the police, adding: "All we have ever wanted is to find her."

Police are appealing for information about two vehicles owned by the man.

The day after Madeleine vanished, the suspect transferred a Jaguar car to someone else's name.

Madeleine went missing from an apartment on a Portuguese holiday resort on the evening of 3 May 2007, while her parents were with friends at a nearby tapas bar.

The three-year-old disappeared from a holiday apartment in Portugal in 2007.

More than £11m has been spent on the Met Police inquiry, known as Operation Grange, since it began in 2011.

The Home Office said a "similar" level of funding would be granted this year as in 2018/19, when the inquiry was given £300,000.

However, the department said the final decision on the amount would not be made until October.

Detectives have been applying to the Home Office every six months for a grant to continue their work.
