Samoa prime minister and Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) chair Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa said a strong plan of action for survival is needed right now.

She said they need much greater mitigation ambition from the international community.

Fiamē also said the loss and damage fund, discussed at COP27, must be operationalised and fit for purpose for SIDS "as communities most vulnerable to climate change".

It appears to have been caused by a faulty front tyre, officials say, adding that the inquiry is ongoing.

The charter bus was taking pupils from Long Island to a band camp when it ran off the road and tumbled into a ditch near the town of Wawayanda.

Officials say 44 people were on the bus. They have been taken to six regional hospitals for treatment.

The crash occurred around 13:10 local time (18:10GMT) on Interstate 84, about two hours north of New York City. Police have closed the highway to allow work tob be carried out at the crash scene.

Fire department Commissioner Daniel Nigro said they had found victims on every floor of the 19-storey block, saying the smoke was "unprecedented".

He told NBC News the death toll was the worst seen in New York for 30 years.

It comes days after an apartment fire in Philadelphia killed 12, with eight children among the dead.

Firefighters were called at about 7.30am (local time) after someone was heard banging on the wall and pleading for help.

It is believed the man was stuck inside a crawlspace for two days.

Rescuers cut through the theatre's walls and found him naked, local media said. He is being treated at a local hospital.

In a statement on Facebook, Syracuse fire department said it was not clear how he'd gained access to the crawlspace behind the wall.

Hanks Johnson, 52, was apprehended on Saturday evening, after a 911 caller reported he was inside the property without permission, police said.

Johnson was charged with criminal trespass and released without bail on Sunday night, they added.

In a statement police say Robert Maraj was walking along a road in Long Island on Friday night when he was hit.

Officers from Nassau County Police Department say "the investigation is ongoing", and the rapper hasn't said anything publicly yet.

The statement didn't say Robert Maraj was Nicki Minaj's dad, but a police spokesman confirmed to AFP that he was her father.

Mr Trump wore a face mask as he entered New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Friday afternoon, staying for about 45 minutes.

The cats, from separate areas of New York state, had mild respiratory illness and are expected to make a full recovery. It is believed that they contracted the virus from people in their households or neighbourhoods, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"Animals, pets, can get infected. There's no evidence that the virus is transmitted from the pet to a human," Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said at the daily coronavirus briefing.
