Novak Djokovic

Djokovic right at home in Melbourne

The top seed triumphed 6-3 6-2 6-3 in a one-sided final against Rafael Nadal on Sunday to claim the 15th grand slam of his career, meaning he sits alone in third place on the all-time list.

Djokovic has also now won the last three majors in succession, a stunning run considering he went under the knife early in February 2018 to cure a troublesome issue with his right elbow.

His decision to have an operation came after a surprise fourth-round exit in Australia to Hyeon Chung, but this year he was the last man standing after crushing Nadal in two hours and four minutes.

Djokovic back to threaten Federer's reign

Federer, who faces Denis Istomin on Monday night to launch his quest for an Open hat-trick, has owned the Open since his stunning return to grand slam glory with an epic victory two years ago over Rafael Nadal.

But his latest reign coincided with Djokovic's mystifying slump during which the Serb dropped to No.22 in the world and was barely a factor at the majors.

Djokovic is undoubtedly back, the 31-year-old rediscovering his mojo in winning Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018 to regain the No.1 ranking and top seeding status for the Open.

Rafael Nadal beats Novak Djokovic to reach Madrid Open final

The Spaniard, 30, won 6-2 6-4 to claim his first victory over the Serb since the 2014 French Open final.

Nadal improved his record on clay this year to 14-0 and will face Austrian Dominic Thiem, who beat Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas 6-4 6-4, in Sunday's final.

Kristina Mladenovic plays Simona Halep in Saturday's women's final.

Nadal confirmed his return to form with a long-awaited win over Djokovic, his 24th in 50 career meetings.

Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Garbine Murguruza progress on opening day

The world number one was reported to have been involved in a close shave with a truck pre-tournament but insisted wildcard Ward came closer to knocking him off on Monday.

"Yeah, actually just also recently they told me about that small article that went into papers. There is no truth to that," Djokovic said after opening his title defence with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win.

"Actually I did come few days in the beginning of the week before Wimbledon with my bicycle.

French Open: Novak Djokovic escapes disqualification

The world number one, a three-time runner-up and seeking a maiden Roland Garros crown to complete the career Grand Slam, defeated Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-3, claiming a place in an eighth French Open semi-final and sixth in succession.

But the 29-year-old Serb, who will face Dominic Thiem of Austria for a spot in the final, admitted he was lucky to escape being kicked out of the tournament in the second game of the third set.
